Understanding and Driving the New Mainstream Economy
We are pleased to bring you this month’s episode of Leadership Reimagined, featuring Sol Trujillo, a global business executive and CEO who was the youngest executive at AT&T and the first US-born Latino to serve as a CEO of a Fortune 200 company, US West. Sal’s rise in the corporate world and the challenges he overcame have helped shape his unique perspective on entrepreneurship and representation. Join us as Sol shares his thoughts on how Latino leaders, entrepreneurs, workers, and consumers are transforming the United States by creating what he calls the “New Mainstream Economy.”
Sol says that U.S. Latinos represent the “second fastest growing economy in the world.” “In the case of the Latino cohort, they’re the most entrepreneurial cohort and the big issue there is capital. A study I asked Bain Consulting to do two and a half years ago, looked at how capital flows in the United States… We found that less than 1% of all invested capital by the top 25 VCs and PEs was going into this cohort…At the same time, almost 80% of all net new businesses formed are by Latinos, and almost 80% of all the net new workers are being supplied by Latinos and consumption.”
Don’t miss this eye-opening conversation on how the Latino population is impacting the country’s overall growth and where Sol calls for “smart immigration.”
After his long career with AT&T, which included becoming the youngest officer in AT&T’s history, at 32 years old, and ultimately being named Chairman and CEO of US West, Solomon D. (“Sol”) Trujillo went on to lead other telecommunications companies, including Graviton, Orange, and Telstra. In 2003, Sol launched Trujillo Investments Group, where he continues to serve as Chairman. Later, he co-founded and served as Chairman and CEO of TruCo Technology and became Chairman of Encantos. He has co-founded three organizations committed to supporting the Latino community, including L’Attitude Ventures and the Latino Donor Collaborative, and has served as a board director at Bank of America, PepsiCo, and Target. He is currently on the board of Western Union.
