Episode 8: Today’s Boards for Tomorrow’s Success
Arriving in the US from Haiti, at nine years of age and not speaking a word of English would be frightening to most of us, but to Les Brun it was a challenge. It propelled him to get a degree in social work, a career path he bypassed for Investment Banking, running his own companies and being a director on multiple boards. Rising straight to the top, Les attributes much of his good fortune and the keys to his success to “luck, perseverance, and insecurity!”
Les Brun began his career over 38 years ago with Chemical Bank in Seoul, South Korea in investment banking, commercial banking, and financial advisory.
Today, he is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SARR Group, a diversified holding company for investments. He is also Vice-Chairman and Senior Advisor of G100 Companies, a unique business partnership that combines the world’s best C-level learning communities with a handful of premier professional services firms. Previously, he was Managing Director and Head of Investor Relations in the New York office of CCMP Capital Advisors, and founder and Chairman Emeritus of Hamilton Lane, the world’s leading Private Equity advisory and management firm, focusing on the firm’s strategic initiatives and direction.
For his remarkable board service, Les is recognized by the NACD as one of America’s Top 100 Corporate Directors.
He shares that having a degree in social work has served him well in Corporate America. Although he has never worked a day in the social welfare field, it taught him “how to understand people in the round, the complex interaction of personality, context and circumstance that makes us who we are at any particular moment—which has always been fundamental to his business success.”
It is my pleasure to share this insightful and inspiring conversation about what makes great corporate governance – “Today’s Boards for Tomorrow’s Success” with Les Brun!
